The Atlas Mountains

Setti Fatma

After our thrilling adventure in the vast Sahara Desert and the bustling streets of Fez, we were ready for a change of pace. Our next destination was the picturesque oasis of Setti Fatma, nestled in a canyon beneath the majestic High Atlas mountains. This day trip promised relaxation, cultural immersion, and a refreshing hike to the mesmerising seven cascading waterfalls.

Our journey began with a stop at a traditional pottery workshop. We observed the intricate process of crafting Moroccan pottery by skilled artisans. From the preparation of the clay to the baking process, we marvelled at the dedication that goes into creating these beautiful pieces. The finished products, each a work of art, were available for purchase.

Our journey continued as we visited a women-led cooperative, It's a special place where Berber women support each other.

As we watched the women work on producing Argan products, including butter and oil, I couldn't help but be inspired by their determination and skill. The cooperative also offered a variety of Argan-infused hair and body products, scented soaps, and more. Every purchase we made contributed to the betterment of these hardworking women and their families.

We continued our journey towards the river, where our mountain guide awaited us to hike Setti Fatma's waterfalls.

The trail zigzaging through the breathtaking Moroccan landscapes, offering stunning views of the surrounding mountains and valleys. The sound of the cascading water accompanied our journey, creating a soothing atmosphere that put me at ease.

As we ascended into the mountains and we arrived at the first of the seven waterfalls, the anticipation grew.

The sight was awe-inspiring. Each waterfall was a unique wonder, and we enjoyed of being so close to nature's beauty.

The panoramic views of the High Atlas Mountains is a majestic beauty of Morocco's natural wonders.

After our delightful hike, our guide led us to a charming riverside restaurant. We enjoyed a really tasty traditional tagine—a flavourful Moroccan dish bursting with aromatic spices and tender ingredients. The soothing sound of the flowing river provided the perfect backdrop for our meal, enhancing the overall dining experience.

To complete our culinary journey, we sipped on refreshing mint tea—a cherished Moroccan tradition. As we enjoyed our tea, we reflected on the day's adventures—the combination of good food, great company of my dear husband, and the tranquil riverside setting was a fitting end to a perfect day in Setti Fatma.

Ourika Valley & Agafay Desert

Karl and I set out early in the morning, accompanied by a private tour that promised us an adventure filled with culture, nature, and heartwarming experiences. Our journey began with a scenic drive through the Atlas mountains, unraveling the beauty of Morocco's diverse landscapes.

Our first stop took us to a women-led cooperative. Cooperatives play an important role in Moroccan tours. They're like key stops that not only showcase the good things they're doing but also give tourists a real opportunity to help and make local communities stronger.

The aroma of freshly brewed mint tea and warm, homemade bread greeted us, accompanied by three delicious dips made from the prized local product, Argan. With each bite, we savoured the fusion of flavours and felt a strong connection to the Berber culture. After the mini breakfast, a short lively performance of traditional music resonated us, played on authentic local instruments.

The tour continued with a demonstration of the meticulous process of creating Argan butter and oil, showcasing the dedication and skill these women pour into their craft.

The cooperativa sells local products, including local spices, Argan-infused hair and body products, scented soaps from jasmine and Moroccan roses, and more. Every purchase held the power to positively impact the lives of these industrious women and their families.

Our journey led us to a small Berber village, where the houses were constructed from the earth itself – a testament to their ingenuity and harmonious coexistence with nature. The guide opened the doors to their daily lives, revealing a distinct contrast to our modern routines. Cooking over a wood fire, washing clothes and produce in the nearby river, crafting furniture and textiles – every aspect of their existence is sustainable.

The Berber people's resourcefulness shone through in every detail, from the handcrafted clay potteries used for cooking to the lush fruits, vegetables, and crops they grew themselves. Their livestock grazed naturally, contributing to the superior quality of their meat. Despite the simplicity of their lives, the Berber people are contentment, an inspiring lesson in the art of embracing life's essentials.

Our journey continued towards the base of the Ourika valley, where a rewarding uphill hike unveiled the awe-inspiring peak of Jebel Toukbal—North Africa’s tallest peak (4167m).

Along our hiking trail, a breathtaking spectacle unfolds before us— Countless massive walnut trees, all around us. Each massive tree, greets us with its outstretched branches, their majestic forms a testament to the passage of time.

After going down, we had a delicious tagine lunch that gave us energy for the next part of our trip.

After lunch, we went into the Agafay Desert, which is a dry expanse that contrasted the towering dunes of the Sahara. Agafay is a sought-after destination because of its close proximity to Marrakesh and has the High Atlas Mountains in the background.

Before embarking on a camel ride, they gave us traditional clothing to put on, allowing us to immerse ourselves fully in the local ambiance. The 40-minute journey was a fun, allowing us to appreciate the desert's unique charm.

As our tour drew to a close, the familiar warmth of mint tea and freshly baked bread with Argan dips brought a sense of comfort.

Our journey through Setti Fatma, Ourika Valley and Agafay Desert was a delightful blend of culture and nature that left a lasting impression. We were deeply moved by the warm harmonious coexistence among the Berber people, we were humbled by the beauty of simple living.

The beautiful landscapes, interesting traditions, and friendly people we met have left a special memory. They remind us of how nature and people can come together in a wonderful way.
